The Savannah River Woodturners Club was formed in 2008 with its first meetings at the home shops of George Stewart and Howard Moore. Both men have since been recognized as life time members for their guidance and inspiration during those first few months when the concept of a club was more dream than reality. The club continues to grow and has become associated with the American Woodturners Association.

Club Members share a common interest and pleasure in using the lathe to transform wood and other raw materials into forms that are practical in use or visually beautiful or both. At club meetings, discussions and demonstrations are held, members bring items they have made to present and acquire feedback and advice, and members enjoy the opportunity to network with others who share their love of woodturning.

Members meet the 3rd Saturday of the month from 9:00am to 1:00pm at 144 North Belair Rd, Evans, GA.

Access to the clubhouse area is from Hickory Drive off of N. Belair Rd. Immediately after turning onto Hickory Drive from N. Belair Rd, turn left thru the gate, bear right around the small building to the shop/clubhouse in the rear.

September, 2010 - BY LEE CAREY, PRESIDENT

From blank to Bowl and everything in between.

I’d say that our guest demonstrator, Howard Moore, pretty well covered it all at our August meeting. Starting with a bowl blank of beautiful Walnut, Howard discussed the many ways that the blank could be oriented and means by which it could be mounted for turning. He explained how to manipulate the cutting tool using the heel to find the bark edge of the bowl before engaging the cutting edge. Lots of other bits of information and suggestions were provided. The result was a walnut bowl with natural bark edge high and low points symmetrically balanced. Howard finished the demonstration by responding to a request for help from Lyle Glascock in mounting an odd shaped piece of wood. The real pleasure here was that the demonstration became of forum of woodturners all exchanging information, recommendations, and humor. You can see Howard doing some more turning near Artist Row on Broad Street at the next First Friday in Augusta.

In September, we’ll welcome Ken Gates from the Palmetto Woodturners Club. Ken is an instructor at Mann-Tool in West Columbia, SC, and will address the various means to enhance your woodturning with metal, epoxies, inlace, and more. I hope you’ll be there.
